We are saddened to hear that former board member and longtime friend of IER Richard L. Stroup passed away on November 18, 2021.
Dr. Stroup spent most of his career teaching economics at Montana State University and later at North Carolina State. He will be remembered as an originator of the New Resource Economics, an approach that is popularly referred to as “free market environmentalism.” In addition to his academic work, Dr. Stroup was involved with several important organizations as he helped found the Property and Environment Research Center (PERC) in Bozeman, Montana, and maintained a longtime relationship with the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C. During the Reagan administration, Stroup served as the director of the Office of Policy Analysis at the Department of Interior.
Dr. Stroup had an enormous impact on students of economics, as he was a co-author of the popular principles textbook Economics: Private and Public Choice, which is now in its 17th edition. He was also the author of Eco‐Nomics: What Everyone Should Know about Economics and the Environment.
