How High are Your State's Electricity Prices?

Your State’s Energy Regulations: Arm Yourself With the Facts

Affordable energy is under assault. The President and some in Congress are promoting a number of policies that will increase the price of energy for all Americans. The challenge to affordable energy is not just happening at the federal level but also at the state level.

Over the past seven years, states have passed over 250 bills that regulate greenhouse gases or will lead to their regulation. These regulations increase the price of oil, coal, and natural gas, the source of 85 percent of our energy.

To educate people about energy issues at the state level, the Institute for Energy Research has just released a new study – Energy Regulations in the States: A Wake-up Call. The report includes fact sheets on energy prices, production, and regulation for all 50 states as well as an interactive map to allow you to quickly compare multiple states.

State Study

Highlights:

  • Electricity prices are nearly 40 percent higher in states with renewable electricity mandates.
  • Petroleum produces only 1 percent of our electricity. Using wind power or solar to produce electricity will do nothing to reduce our use of foreign oil.
  • Thirteen of the 15 states with the least expensive residential electricity prices produce at least 50 percent of their electricity from either coal or hydroelectric power.
  • Americans need more affordable energy now, not vague promises for the future. Check out our report and equip yourself with the facts about energy today.
