WASHINGTON DC (12/13/2024) – The Institute for Energy Research (IER) has released a new report providing a comprehensive analysis of the current landscape of electric vehicles (EVs). The paper, titled “When Government Chooses Your Car: Examining the Challenges and Complexities of a Transition to Electric Vehicles” addresses the myths and limitations of the forced transition to electric vehicles, and outlines the problem with policymakers encouraging increased EV usage beyond the market for them.
Accompanying the report is a new website, EV Focus, to serve as an aggregator of news and analysis about auto policy and the market. EV Focus is an information center for those seeking a realistic perspective on the future of electric vehicles.
IER’s President, Tom Pyle, issued the following statement on the report:
“Our latest research reveals a more complex reality behind the political push for electric vehicles. The proponents of vehicle electrification, driven by ideology, often overlook critical issues such as high costs, access to minerals, battery disposal, and unequal access to new technologies. The policymakers pushing EV mandates want us to ignore these key challenges and place the economic burden squarely on taxpayers and consumers.
“Given the uncertainty surrounding future technological advancements, public policy should prioritize consumer preferences as the guiding principles in shaping the automobile market. Consumers, with their diverse needs and preferences, should have the freedom to choose the types of cars and trucks that best suit their needs. This allows the market to reflect individual needs and desires, empowering consumers to make choices that align with their values. This approach also guarantees a wide range of options, from internal combustion engines to hybrids, electric vehicles, and future innovations in transportation that we don’t even know about yet. Most importantly, it preserves access to mobility— a fundamental aspect of American life that has fueled our nation’s growth and dynamism for over a century.”

IER’s President, Tom Pyle, issued the following statement about EV Focus:
“The automobile market and the election outcome have made it quite clear that the frequent assertions of an inevitable ‘all EV future’ warrant considerable scrutiny. Car buyers and voters want the government to make a U-turn on mandating electric vehicles or banning gas-powered cars and trucks. EV Focus will serve as a go-to resource on the current state of electric vehicles, providing valuable insights for all stakeholders in this important public policy discussion. I encourage everyone to take EV Focus for a test drive.”
